A couple of days ago, I was watching one of my favorite childhood movies.
I love this movie a lot because it was filmed in the city I grew up in.
And the movie reminded me of the days when life was simpler, where all I cared about was running around and playing with my friends. We lived on a block where there were a bunch of one-family homes as well as a few apartment buildings on the end of the block. All the kids in the neighborhood knew each other and the parents did as well. So, it wasn’t uncommon for some of us to spend the night at each other’s houses. In fact, during the Summer, we did that a lot. Our friend Janelle had the best house on the block, so we used to stay there the most. Janelle had something in her house that many of us didn’t have and that was air conditioning. And best of all, she had a finished basement that also had a window air conditioner and that’s where we all used to sleep. Her parents were ok with us sleeping in the basement because Janelle’s older brother and sister were forced to “babysit” us on those evenings. We played games, ate bad food, and watched our favorite TV shows. But of course, the best part was sleeping in a comfortable room with air conditioning. We all slept on the floor because there were no beds in the basement, but we didn’t mind it at all. At times, we built makeshift tents and forts to make the experience that much better. Those were the good old days when having air conditioning was far and few in between. Today, most if not all of us live in houses with central air conditioning. We have certainly come a long way.
