I heard that years of neglected service made the fireplace a health hazard, so the previous owners purchased a wood stove and affixed the flue to the chimney high above the fireplace mantle to bypass it. If you keep a fine supply of firewood, it’s a huge benefit for Winter heating. There’s a fine heating plan here however the wood stove is a powerhouse on its own. In the worst case scenario of a Winter power outage, it’s comforting to think that you’ll always be warm. You just need a steady supply of firewood if you want on demand wood heating.
