When I realized that my friend Lori and I were members at the same fitness center, I asked her if she’d like to carpool. The drive is approximately twenty minutes, and it seemed like a good idea to save gas and enjoy some company. I didn’t realize that she and I use the gym in very different ways. I am extremely dedicated to my fitness level. I workout in some way every single day and typically utilize the gym four or five times per week. If I’m going to pay the membership fees and make the commute, I want to get the most out of my efforts. I spend at least an hour exercising at the gym. I utilize as much of the equipment as possible. I might sprint on the treadmill for twenty minutes then switch to the stationary bike for twenty more. I might stick with the elliptical for the full hour or work my way through all of the strength training machines. I enjoy lifting weights, using the kettlebells and hitting the heavy bag. I go through all different types of lunges, squats, push-ups, pull-ups and abdominal crunches. By the time I’m done with my workout, I’m panting and dripping sweat. I definitely need a shower and change of clothes. Lori only wants to go to the gym one or two times per week. She mainly uses the tanning beds. Now and then she will sign up for a massage or pedal a bike while reading a book. She never gets sweaty enough to require a shower. Whenever she and I go together, she tells me to take my time. However, I feel rushed and unsatisfied with my workout.
