How Carrier Air Conditioners Work to Cool Our Household Air

Air conditioning is nearly synonymous with the name Carrier.  There is good reason for that. Carrier has been the consummate leader when it comes to HVAC for over one hundred years.  The air conditioning colossus has gone from a small group of engineers to a global leader in HVAC and efficiency technology.  But, Carrier is also more than that. Carrier started out changing the very dynamics of business but has always stayed totally customer comfort focused.  It all started in 1902 when Willis Carrier and his small band of engineers unveiled the very first modern air conditioning design. Those men then pooled their talents and money, under Willis Carrier’s able direction, to form the Carrier Corporation in 1915.  From their factory in Newark, New Jersey, the new Carrier group began to completely change the world as they began producing the first commercial air conditioning systems. The American economy was forever changed with Carrier’s invention. Nearly every business was affected in some way from manufacturing to food handling.  The advent of an effective air cooling method simply transformed the way we did business. The next several decades were focused on providing an ever growing number or commercial air conditioning applications. Viable, reliable air conditioning was a vital jumping off point for the growth of American economic power. Without Carrier we wouldn’t have air conditioning as we know it.  Perhaps that is why the name Carrier immediately brings to mind air conditioning. That’s because Carrier, during the 1950’s, brought the air conditioner to the average homeowner. Through technological innovation, the Carrier Corporation created another enormous economic market and changed the very landscape of this country. Suddenly, air conditioning was available and came in an affordable package.  The effects of this innovation in HVAC would lead to a dramatic change in the American tableau. Areas of the country which had once been viewed as too hot to effectively develop were becoming not only livable but desired locations for making a home. Entire regions that were once sparsely populated were now experiencing sprawling population growth. The land of the sun was now a viable place to live given the balance that air conditioned inside air provided.  This led to decades and decades of growth and air conditioning becoming nearly ubiquitous throughout the country.

We all are familiar with the most popular type of air conditioning. The technical name is the split style air conditioner but most of us know this air conditioning system as the central air unit. While we are all mostly aware of the central air system of air conditioning, I would guess that very few of us actually know how this thing works. The split system or central air unit consists of a “cold side” and a “warm side”.  Basically, the cold side is made up of all the air conditioning components that are contained on the inside of the house. The warm side is the equipment which is outside of the home. The cabinet which rests on a concrete pad next to the home contains the compressor, condenser and a motor with a large fan. This air conditioning equipment is then connected to the inside unit by copper tubing. The inside or cold side of the air conditioning system consists of the air handler, fan coil and evaporator coil. The inside and outside unit work together to provide comfortable temperatures for the inside air.  The entire process starts with the thermostat sensing a rise in the ambient air temperature within the home.

That thermostat then signals both the inside and outside components to start working simultaneously. A fan within the air handler pulls the indoor air through a return duct in the home. That air is then blown across the cold evaporator coil. Refrigerant, in liquid form, inside the evaporator begins to turn into a gas. In this form, the refrigerant is able to absorb the heat from the inside air. This air is then cooled by the coil and subsequently sent into the home by the blower fan. The refrigerant which is still a gas then exits the home for the outside unit through the copper tubing.  The refrigerant goes straight into the compressor where it is pressurized and the sent to the condenser coil. At this point, the heat is then released to the outside air. During this process, the refrigerant transforms back into a liquid. The liquid refrigerant then moves back through the copper tubing to the cold side of the system. At last, that refrigerant goes through an expansion device which then regulates the refrigerant flow back into the evaporator coil where the process starts all over again. This cycle goes on and on until the desired inside temperature is reached at which point the thermostat signals the air conditioning system to stop. So, it’s not some function of blowing canned cold air into a home.  The modern air conditioner actually does the majority of the cooling by removing the heat from the inside air. While the air conditioning is removing heat it is also doing another vital task. When the air conditioning is running, it is removing humidity from the air as well.

This provides an indoor environment where mold and mildew are less likely to proliferate. Air conditioning is a very precise mechanized process that relies on both nature and physics. The Carrier Corporation has continued to explore and innovate to provide more efficient and eco friendly methods for providing comfort inside your home. Puron refrigerant is a great example of the type of technological innovation I was referring to. The leaps Puron has made from what was once Freon is tremendous.  The only comparison is that both refrigerants have the same basic function. Carrier has led the way in the transition from ozone depleting Freon to the eco friendly Puron refrigerant. And they do this while continually providing a reliable, quality air conditioning product.
