My work crew has an impeccable safety record. The people I was with and I are a team of specialists that work for a general company with a major operation. It’s a nice task, and every one of us all take worksite safety legitimately seriously! When someone gets hurt it costs everyone money, so every one of us take all the precautions needed for every task, every time. This makes it all the more ironic that I got injured at home, away from work, while trying to wash out the Heating, Ventilation and A/C exhaust vent on my roof. I had a couple of beers in my already, I had Jimmy Buffet blasting on the sound system, and I decided to do a little HVAC duct cleaning. This was a recipe for disaster, it turns out, because I failed to wash the HVAC duct, and I also fell off the roof and broke my arm. The worst area of this wasn’t the physical pain, it was the sting of embarrassment when I had to tell my fellow Heating, Ventilation and A/C techs what had happened. The entire air conditioning system maintenance crew got a large laugh out of my story. No one felt sorry for me, they just roasted me. An Heating, Ventilation and A/C tech with 15 years of experience couldn’t handle his own duct cleaning? This was the height of comedy for these guys. I am still going to work every afternoon, even with my arm in a sling, only now I’m doing more paperwork and admin duties than heating and cooling repair. In another month or so I will be back to 100% and can resume work, and finish cleaning my HVAC duct at home.
