There is a difference between ductless mini splits and multi splits

I got into an argument with my friend the other day.

I was talking about installing a ductless mini split in my home. He said I really should be thinking about a ductless multi split to cover my whole home. I thought about it and then said that the two were the same thing. He said they definitely are not the same, the multi split can cover a whole home for heating and cooling. I argued that they were still the same but had a slightly different name. Well, he ended up looking it up and sure enough, he was right. While they technically are the same type of HVAC system and have the same technology for heating and cooling, the multi split system has more indoor units, up to 8 running off a single condenser unit. Regardless of the fact that I was wrong and I really did need a multi split system, it was interesting to learn that the ductless mini splits are usually used to supplement a central HVAC system in areas that are not getting enough heating or cooling in the home. A lot of people like to use a ductless mini split for their garage space or even for an indoor porch. I know that nobody is perfect and I’m sure others will argue just like I did that these systems are the same. It doesn’t really matter though. What matters is achieving comfort in your home with lower energy bills. That’s exactly what I was trying to do, but I didn’t want to supplement my old central HVAC, I just wanted to go ductless altogether!
