I could hear the furnace turn on last evening

It was almost eighty degrees last week, but I could hear the furnace turn on in the middle of the evening.

I had no idea it was supposed to get cold last evening, but it did.

Throughout the evening, the weather changed. The wind was howling, and there was a light rain shower. Around midnight, the temperature dropped from seventy to thirty-six degrees Fahrenheit, and the house was cool. I was relieved that I hadn’t forced my spouse to turn on the air conditioning. I would have been cold even if it had been cool when I awoke. He had the thermostat set to sixty degrees, and when I got out of bed, he had a fire going in the fireplace to help warm up the family room. I began his brunch so he could leave for work. He told me he was sure there would be a lot of service calls this week, people would have had their air conditioning on for the last few days when the heat was on, and now that it was nearly thirty degrees cooler than earlier this week, plus back to normal, people would forget they needed to switch back to heating. He’d charge a lot of customers for coming to their condos and resetting their thermostats to heat. It amazes me how quickly my colleague and I forget the little things, like switching from heat to AC, but it’s better than discovering there’s a problem with the furnace or the thermostat. I know my husband, the Heating and Air Conditioning technician, will charge the lowest amount possible, but it will still be an unnecessary bill for them to pay.
